Finding an Employee-Centric Company

When most people look for a job, the first factor they consider is compensation. While that’s totally understandable, and definitely one of the most important pieces of choosing a job, there are other key aspects that often get overlooked. If your goal is to stay at your next company for a good amount of time, intentionally seeking out an employee-centric organization is a good idea. When you know that a company cares about you, you are more likely to be engaged, excited to go to the office, and produce your best work.

An employee-centric company is a company culture that welcomes ideas, feels like a genuine safe space, and offers employees more than just the usual benefits and competitive pay.

Although a company may initially seem like “the place” because they offered you a decent salary, you have to take into account whether: you want to move up in the company, if atmosphere is important to you, and if you want benefits outside of the traditional health and retirement plans.

Here are a few things you can look for to determine if a company is employee-centric:

1. Non-Traditional Benefits

It really shows that a company cares about their employees when they offer benefits related to time, health and family. Some examples are: a stipend for gas, lunch, etc., shorter days near the holidays, and paying for a gym membership. Obviously, the bigger corporations are able to offer more of these perks than smaller companies. However, even the smallest of companies can offer conveniences like having a stocked fridge, paid breaks, and massage/chiropractic vouchers.

2. Culture

Everyone knows that company culture is more important than ever in today’s workforce; however, it goes beyond an organization’s core values and the personality of the company. Having traditions such as friendly competitions for a small prize, weekly fun meetings that aren’t about work, and company parties are all examples of what can create a great company culture. This shows that a company wants their employees to enjoy where they work and understands the importance of taking breaks and making personal connections.

3. Trust

This is a big one. Autonomy is something that all people want these days and that goes for their personal and professional lives, and companies that offer perks like unlimited PTO, flexible schedule, no set hours, and mental health days (separate from sick days) are the ones with the happiest employees. Knowing that your company trusts you to put in all of your hours and not abuse the time-off policies is a good indicator that you will also be trusted to make the right decisions, solve problems, and produce the best results.

 4. Fairness

Especially when you plan to stay at a company for years to come, you want to make sure it’s a place that treats everyone equally. This means that all employees have access to the same opportunities and that regardless of position, all team members get equal recognition and rewards. A company can demonstrate this by: offering two way performance reviews, promoting from within, and giving all employees access to the same perks regardless of position or salary. This shows a company truly works as a team and understands that all roles are crucial despite the amount of skill or experience an individual has.

How to Find Out if a Job is For You

One of the trickiest things when it comes to finding a new job, is gaging whether or not a company is a good fit for you. This can be especially difficult when you get multiple offers that all have their different perks and you don’t want to choose the wrong one.

Outside of how they present themselves on their website and social media pages, there isn’t much to work with when it comes to assessing how it would feel to work in a company’s environment and if your needs as an employee match what that employer is willing to give you.

Your full-time job is where you spend the majority of your time, and while there is plenty of opportunity out there should something not work out; we all prefer to find the right place of employment on the first try.

Here are a few ways you can help yourself establish if a workplace could be well suited for you:

1. Look at the Details in Job Postings

Most people look at the entire picture when looking through job postings, which is definitely important; but if you pay attention to specific points, you’ll notice that there are small hints about what the company values. For instance, if the first few paragraphs discuss being a tight-knit team that doesn’t mind staying late a few nights per week; it’s probably not a good fit for someone who prefers to work solo and needs to be somewhere at a certain time after work. Or, if the posting is written with a lot of humor and wit, it may or may not be the place for someone who has a history of strictly professional work environments. It all depends on what matters to you.

2. Consider the Soft Skills that are Needed

Soft skills are non-technical skills that are not job/industry specific and can be applied in a variety of situations. Critical thinking, problem solving, and time-management are all examples of soft skills, and everyone possesses different ones, depending on their work history and natural abilities. Job postings almost always contain statements such as: “must be able to think on your feet” or “the right candidate is someone who is very organized”. Look for positions that list soft skills that you are good at.

3. Ask About the Main Tasks

While most employers are pretty good at giving accurate depictions of what a position in their company entails, it’s a good idea to ask a few additional questions, so you can ensure that the parts of the job that will affect you the most are in line with what you are expecting. During an interview, ask the questions: “What are the main tasks I will be doing?” and “What does a typical day and week in this position look like/consist of?”. This will give you a clear picture of how you will spend your time and if it’s a place where you see yourself thriving.

4. Determine the Impact

Everyone wants to feel like they have a significant role within their company whether their job is to drive more revenue or to support others within the organization. Before you accept any position, ask how your role specifically will affect the company as a whole. The response you receive will speak volumes about the social structure of that company and whether or not they see the value in all roles within the company. Every business has many moving parts, and they are all important. It’s crucial for all companies to know this.

5. Ask How Your Performance Will Be Measured

Some people do well in a competitive environment, while others do better working at their own pace. Additionally, some companies have lofty performance goals and measurements, while others offer leeway as long as the work is being put forth. Also, when it comes to pay increases, some companies base it strictly off of production and numbers, while others consider factors such as attendance, teamwork, and adaptability. It’s up to the individual to decide which one will work better for them.

What Job Seekers Should Know in 2022

As you likely already know, the job market is currently full of opportunity. Nearly every company is hiring and offering better pay and benefits than they ever have before, in efforts to bring in more employees. This means that right now, job seekers have the opportunity to request more out of the companies they receive offers from, than they have in the past.

Additionally, hiring managers are currently being more flexible with requirements and allowing candidates with lesser experience to come onboard. However, lately there has been a frequent discrepancy between what companies are looking for and what candidates are communicating that they can offer. Regardless of the position or industry, individuals seeking new work opportunities must tailor their résumés to match the needs of the companies they are applying to.

Here are the most important things for job seekers to know as they apply for work in 2022:

1. Reliability is Key

While it used to be that applicants needed to have a certain number of years of experience or a certain technical skill to be considered qualified; current employers are willing to train people who demonstrate a strong work ethic. Due to the lack of workers, employees can’t risk people not showing up or showing up late on a regular basis. This is the most valued quality an employee can have these days. If you can truly say that you’re dependable, be sure to list that as a skill on your résumé.

2. You Can Ask For More

It used to be that people felt like they were never offered the compensation that they were worth or that they had to choose a job based on which one could offer the best benefit package. With the shortage, organizations are finally seeing the essentialism of giving people competitive wages and benefits. If you get an offer from a company you deem a good fit, don’t be afraid to negotiate pay and workplace perks. There is a good chance they will make you a better offer than they initially had.

3. Problem Solving

In any job that you take, there are going to be issues that arise. The ability to take initiative in handling them is something that employers want to see in the people they hire. Prior to showing up for an interview, be sure to think of a past situation when you needed to think on your feet. Those who have the ability to do this are the ones who will be offered promotions when a higher-paying position becomes available. Showing that you can problem solve also demonstrates that you value your position and are not just there to punch in and out.

4. Consider Company Culture and Environment

Right now, employees are putting more emphasis than ever on the importance of a positive company culture and work environment. Truthfully, the only way for a job to be a good fit over the long term is to enjoy your surroundings and feel comfortable in the space you spend your working hours. Be sure to ask what the company culture is like and if you can, get a tour of the area you will be working before accepting an offer. Don’t feel like you have to settle for the first opportunity that comes your way, there is plenty of opportunity in the 2022 job market.

How to Tailor Your Résumé to Match the Job You Want

Something we have recently observed to be a common occurrence; is a gap between what companies are looking for to qualify candidates, and what job seekers are putting on their résumés.

For people looking for a new opportunity in their area of expertise, this can make finding a job a bit of a challenge.

While part of the issue is that employers are not being entirely clear about the qualifications applicants need to apply, there are things job seekers can do to make their skills and experience stand out to employers.

Here are some of our recommendations:

1. Use Key Words From the Job Posting

Nearly all companies use AI to sort through applications these days. By using words from the posting, the applicant tracking system will instantly recognize the congruence between the post description and your résumé. Additionally, when employers are reading through résumés, industry buzz words are what will jump out at them first. Because many companies have yet to master the “science” of a perfectly communicated job description; the next best thing for candidates to do, is use the right terminology.

2. Apply in More Than One Place

Of course the first place that you want to apply, is directly on the company’s website or using the link the job posting provides. However, if you want to get in quicker, consider sending an email to HR or the hiring manager. Not only does this show initiative and a proactive approach, it will also give you a chance to better explain what you can offer. Applications or submitting your resume through an employment site don’t always give you a chance to thoroughly share your skills. When you’re sending an email, put some of your hard skills and experience in the body of the email.

3. Use Simplicity

Many people submit résumés that are multiple pages and have way too many skills and qualifications listed. While this may be necessary for someone looking for an executive role; individuals who are just getting back into the workforce after a hiatus, or are simply looking for the same role at a different company should be concise. You don’t need to showcase everything you’ve done/can do, you just need to inform them why you are a good fit for the role.

4. Include an Objective

There are so many different résumé templates out there, that the types that employers receive will vary. However, one thing that they should all include; is an objective. This is simply a brief statement that communicates why you are applying for the job and what you can offer. It is typically the first thing included on a résumé, after ones name and contact information. This gives the employer an instant chance to determine whether or not a person could be a fit for what they’re looking for. If your objective is well-done, it will catch their eye.

5. Call or Apply In-Person

While this may not be the right strategy for every position; if you are looking for work in the warehouse or light industrial space, it can definitely be a good option. Many companies in that industry are looking for people to start right away and will even offer you the position and let you start working the same day. Since many of the skills needed can be taught relatively quickly, it benefits employers to get you in and on the floor right away. If you call, they will very likely ask you to come in for an interview and offer the position on the spot if you’re a good fit.

Additionally, it may be helpful to contact a staffing agency to have a recruiter help you with your résumé and share new, local opportunities.

Why it’s a Great Time to Choose a Warehouse or Assembly Position

By now, you’ve likely heard from more than one source, the term explaining the employee shortage that all businesses across the country are experiencing right now: The Great Resignation.

The pandemic has led people in all industries to re-evaluate how and where they’re spending their time, and whether or not their current or former jobs are worth it.

Individuals are also considering their relationship to work and employment in general, which is a determining factor in whether or not they will continue working or go back to work in the near future.

It is projected that this phenomenon will continue well into 2022, which makes right now an ideal time to take a warehouse or assembly position.

Here are the top reasons why:

1. You can negotiate pay, benefits, hours, etc. – more than ever before

If there’s one thing that employers are learning more and more since the beginning of this employee shortage, it’s that their business relies on people to run. This has incentivized them to do everything they can to attract and retain workers, including offering the pay, benefits, and working conditions that people want.

Currently, very few companies are in a position to be as rigid and particular as they have been in the past. They would rather grant you the pay and hours people than turn away qualified candidates.

Additionally, all companies are paying a much higher rate than they ever have before. This makes it a great time to jump in.

2. Retail sales are at an all-time high

Since last October, sales have been significantly higher than expected on nearly all products. Reports show that this trend isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. Even with prices increasing at the fastest pace they have since the 90s, consumers have not been discouraged.

Choosing a warehouse position will give you long-term job security, as there will be a continuous need to pack and ship orders.

3. Electronics and appliances sales have increased the most

Of all products, electronics and appliances have seen the most sales growth. Because of this, there is high need for assembly workers. Just like that of warehouse positions, this provides security to employees who choose these positions.

4. Companies are making greater efforts

Knowing how crucial employees are now, companies are putting more effort into creating a workplace that values the people within the company just as much as the profit. Now that they have a deeper understanding that an individual’s personal needs are just as important as their work needs; they’re prioritizing building relationships with employees and being more flexible with scheduling and other policies.

5. There are hundreds of openings

In October 2021 alone, there were 11 million new job postings in the United States with manufacturing and warehousing being in the top 10 for the most positions. This means that there is plenty of opportunity to test out different positions and companies to see what meets your needs the best. Unlike prior years when it was difficult to find a job, if you decide a position or organization is not for you; you will be able to find another similar position with ease.

A great way to experiment with different roles and companies is to work with a staffing agency to find temporary positions.

Why Knowing What Meaningful Work Means to You is Crucial to Placement Success

One of the most important things to us at Award Staffing is that both our internal and our external employees find meaning in their jobs.

When our recruiters place our associates, they do not want to simply place them in the first role that is available; they want to place them in a position that is a good fit, with a company that they can grow with and hopefully move up in that organization.

We know that a career is a person’s livelihood, and we want to see all of our employees find both success and fulfillment in the roles they are hired for.

One of the things that can help you be successful in any future role is: knowing what meaningful work means to you. We all have different definitions of what meaningful work is and by knowing what it means to you, the recruiter you are working with can help you find the best match.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding what meaningful work means to you:

1. Is a relationship with my colleagues important to me?

This is a huge determining factor in whether or not a team-based role or a more individual role is a better fit for you. If you want to be with a team that you can grow with, a smaller company with a tight-knit team is likely a good match. Whether or not a team-based position is important to you is definitely something you want to share with the recruiter you are working with.

2. Is meaningful in the work or in what the work provides me?

For some people, knowing that they are assembling medical devices for people in need of them is what they need to feel fulfilled. For others, simply having a job that provides for them while still being able to spend time with their family is all the meaning they need. It is deeply personal. If you are looking for a role that directly involves contributing to the common good, don’t be afraid to ask your recruiter what types of roles like that they offer.

3. Do I want a role that will provide me professional growth?

We have some associates that have full intention of moving up to higher positions within a company and others that have been perfectly happy working the same position and the same hours for several years. It all depends on your lifestyle and personal goals. If you need a consistent schedule that is almost guaranteed to never change, there are definitely companies that match that requirement. If you have more flexibility and see yourself moving up as you learn more, communicate to your recruiter that you would like a company with plenty of opportunity for growth.

4. Do I want more experience before deciding what the best fit is for me?

The nice thing about working with a staffing agency is that there are always plenty of temporary positions you can try out before committing to something long term. It’s ok if you don’t know exactly the direction you want to go yet. Let your recruiter know that you are currently only interested in temporary positions and once you feel like you have found a fit, ask them what long-term options are available.

How the Right Placement Can Help You Find Your Purpose

One of the things we know to be important here at Award Staffing is that every person finds their purpose in the workplace. That’s why we feel that a big part of our purpose is connecting people through meaningful work.

We know how important it is that people feel a sense of both contribution and accomplishment doing the work that they do, as that’s how most people spend 40+ hours of their week.

It’s important to us that anyone we place, whether it’s temporary or permanent finds a place where they feel a sense of purpose. It’s then that we know we did our job well and that both our client and our associate can feel confident about working with us and the future of their career and business.

Here are just a few of the ways that finding the right placement can help you find your future:

1. You can know whether or not you want to manage and what type of manager you want to be

One big advantage about the industry we are in and the type of work we staff for is that there is plenty of room for growth and that many of the positions are very collaborative. This helps you become familiar with all departments and get to know everyone on the management team. It’s through observation that you’ll know what management style you and other employees respond to best and whether or not you are interested in taking on a management role in the future.

 2. You can find an industry that you may not have thought you would ever be passionate about

It’s usually not until someone has worked in the light industrial sector that people know what truly goes on in a warehouse or at a distribution site. Anyone in those positions can tell you that there are many moving parts. By trying out a temporary position at a site or warehouse, you can observe and decide what type of role you would do best in and what shift pairs best with your home life.

 3. You can know what environment you need to thrive/where you do best

Some people do better in a quieter more low-key environment, while others do better in a constantly going, more team-based setting. If you have already tried out working in an office or at a desk, a light industrial position could be the next step. It’s only after you try a variety of positions that you will find what you enjoy the most and where you do your best work.

4. You can know if company culture, having a team, or working individually is best for you

Because there are so many different positions in warehouses and distribution centers, you will likely be able to try out a variety of them within a short period of time. In this industry, extra people are always needed; therefore, positions are always open. While some people want to work for a company that emphasizes team work and company culture, others want a job where they can zone out on their own. If you work a few temporary positions, you’ll discover your preference and can choose what’s right for a long-term position.

How Working with a Staffing Agency Can Help You Find Meaningful Work

While everyone has different definitions of “meaningful work”, I think we could all agree that we all want to have a job that is meaningful. Working a job that feels meaningful, makes going to work 5 days per week more fulfilling and increases employee retention as well as the likelihood of people moving up within their company.

Finding meaningful work can be difficult though as it is hard to gage what working at a certain company will be like and what their values are, prior to getting hired on and seeing for yourself. This is why we highly recommend partnering with a staffing agency to find meaningful work.

Staffing agencies work with hundreds of clients at a time and have likely toured the facilities, spoken with multiple leaders within the company, and gotten feedback from candidates and associates about what it’s like to work there. This allows them to get a good idea of what the experience will be like for employees, so they can offer input on whether or not a specific position or company will be a good fit for you.

Working with a staffing agency can give you access to:

1. Companies that Contribute to the Common Good

Recent studies have shown that regardless of how well employees are being compensated, they still want to work in an organization that gives back. Whether it’s to the local community or somewhere on the other side of the world, companies that give back get more interest from prospects and have higher employee retention rates. As a staffing agency will know their client very well, they can share what the company does to contribute to the common good and you can decided if it is a cause you want to get on board with.

2. Work that Involves Building Essential Products or Helping Others with their Needs

Despite any preconceived notions people may have about warehouse work or any type of light industrial position, many of those jobs are essential for society to function. There are many companies where warehouse employees are building medical devices, transporting essential goods, packaging and shipping important packages, and/or distributing healthy goods. If you want to directly contribute to a better functioning world, warehouses are a great place to do so. If you have something specific in mind, you can ask your recruiter what companies and positions they have that are in those lines of work.

3. Companies that Will Value You

Everyone wants to feel valued whether they are part-time or full-time. It’s truly a given that all companies should go out of their way to make their employees feel appreciated, but sadly many companies don’t. The good news is, all staffing agencies are in regular contact with their associates to check-in and ask for feedback on their new position. They know and want to partner with companies that appreciate the associates they send and can recommend that you apply and interview with the ones that do.

4. Organizations with a Good Company Culture

Today, company culture is more important than ever. Since people spend so much time at their place of employment, they want to be in a place where there are good relationships between colleagues and management, and where they can feel comfortable going in and not like they are walking on eggshells every day. A good company culture starts with leadership and since recruiters are always communicating with their clients, they know the places that have the best company culture. Since they have seen the facilities and can tell you whether or not the environment is clean, what the noise levels are, and how closely you will be working with others, you can use that to make your decision.

5. A Company that Honors what is Important to You

Different things are important to different people. Some people want to work for a company with plenty of overtime opportunities, while others want to work for a company with generous PTO and flexible schedules. Some people want a place where they are offered a 9-5 schedule; others want an overnight shift to accommodate their lifestyle. If you share with your recruiter what is important to you, they can determine which companies match what you’re looking for and the right way to tailor your résumé to get an interview with that company.

Top Benefits of Working a Warehouse Position

Now that we are well into the holiday season, one of the business industries across the board is the warehouse sector of the light industrial space. With stores needing to stock up on extra goods for holiday meals and décor along with people ordering tons of gifts online to be sent out to places all over the world, it’s no wonder that every year, warehousing companies hire a ton of extra help when this time of year rolls around.

The nice thing about getting a warehouse position though, is that it is an ever-growing industry and is in need of employees year-round. Let’s face it, with the convenience of online shopping, warehouse work is here to stay. Even this Black Friday saw record low numbers due to the option to purchase the same items online.

Warehouse work is very important, as the processing and shipping of goods as vital for this world to function. Here are just a few of the top reasons to consider warehouse work for your next job.

1. You Don’t Need Technical Skills

Working in a warehouse is a great choice for someone who has little to no work experience or is considering a career change. To work in a warehouse position, you don’t need a specific skillset. In fact, most of the time, soft skills are the most important factor in the hiring process. For example, the ability to work independently once you’re trained and reliably showing up to work is what employers need to ensure a smooth operation.

2. Flexible Hours and Overtime

Because warehouse work doesn’t involve customer or client interaction, nearly all warehouses extend their hours far beyond traditional business hours. In fact, many of them are open 24/7. This means that there are multiple shifts to choose from and you likely don’t have to work the same schedule every day if you don’t want to. Additionally, since there is always a need for employees in this line of work as well as random influxes throughout the year, overtime will be offered on multiple occasions.

3. Work Independently

Although warehouse work is team-based as a whole, typically when someone is hired, they are given a specific role on the floor that does not require more than one person. This can be stocking, pulling orders, scanning and processing, doing inventory. Many people like this type of work because they can listen to music while working and do not have to rely on others for their job to be complete.

4. Time Goes By Fast

Due to the nature of the work being fast paced, the constantly moving environment makes the day move quickly. There are few moments when working in a warehouse is slow enough to stop for a long enough time to be bored. You will also have plenty of your colleagues around you at all times. Whether you’re discussing work related tasks or socializing on your 15 minute break, the interaction will also help the day go by faster.

5. Keeps You In Shape

All warehouse positions require some kind of constant movement, whether you’re picking, loading, or packaging. The walking and lifting definitely gives you your workout for the day. This definitely saves you time as you won’t have to hit the gym or do a home workout once you’re off.

6. Opportunity for Promotion

Something most people don’t know is that warehouses are much more likely to promote from within than to hire for positions externally. With so many moving parts, it’s preferable to choose someone who is familiar with the layout of the floor, knows the people they will be working with, and is proficient in the way that particular facility operates. This saves on hiring costs and also allows the company to have people who know how to do multiple jobs if need be.

Six Reasons to Search for Employment through a Staffing Agency

If working with a staffing agency is new to you, it’s understandable why you may not see the benefit in it right away. You’re likely thinking, why would I go through an agency when I can just apply to the jobs I want myself? While that’s a fair thought, there are several perks to finding work through a recruiting company that you’re more than likely not aware of. Not only will it be much more convenient, but having a reputable recruiter there to promote you will surely be to your advantage.

Here are just a few of the reasons that working with a staffing agency will do you good:

1. They know the local market very well

Especially if they have been in their position for a while, they have many connections and relationships in the local area. This means they have already built rapport with multiple companies that trust them to send quality candidates. They know what specifically is important to each company and can pitch you and help you tailor your résumé in a way that makes you ideal for the position.

2. It will likely get you a job quicker

Remember, it is in a recruiter’s best interest to fill positions as quickly as possible while still choosing the best people. Additionally, when companies contact recruiting agencies, it’s because they are in current need of employees and have the goal of getting qualified people through the door sooner rather than later. Since the recruiter processes all of your new hire paperwork instead of the employer, you won’t have to worry about coordinating a time to go and take care of it with the company. It’s a common thing for candidates to have interviews and then be able to start working the next day when you go through a staffing agency.

3. They’ll be able to share with you opportunities that you wouldn’t otherwise know about

Did you know that some companies find their people exclusively through staffing agencies? There may be positions near you that you didn’t know were available because the company doesn’t advertise online or through job boards. Also, though you may know your surrounding areas very well, there are always hidden and new businesses that the staffing agencies are the first to know about.

4. You can ask specific questions about culture, environment, management, etc...

When you apply for and accept a job through the company directly, outside of the impression you get from your interview, you won’t know much about the company prior to starting. Agencies on the other hand know the companies through-and-through. Before they are able to start sending candidates to the client, they have thorough conversations with leaders in the organization and have often toured the facility to see what the atmosphere is like. This allows you to ask questions to be sure it’s a good fit before committing to any position.

5. You can be more specific

Especially in the Light Industrial and Warehouse sectors, there are shifts of all kinds being offered. Overtime, half days, part-time, full-time, overnight, early morning. When a company publicly advertises a position, they typically have set shifts that they are looking to fill. When working with a recruiting agency, you can tell them what your preferred hours are and they can try and match you with a company that fits well with your schedule.

6. Saves time

Instead of having to apply to numerous companies through their websites, you can simply submit your résumé to the staffing agency you’re working with and they can send it off to the companies for you. You also won’t have to worry about scheduling interviews with each company individually; you can simply give the recruiter your availability and they can coordinate the details for you.
